Product Development Expert

You will be based in one of our European offices as part of our Operations Practice. We assist our clients in solving complex operational challenges. Blending strategic thinking with hands-on practicality, our teams of consultants and experts work to develop and implement operational strategies that solve our clients' most critical problems.

You will play an active role in problem solving for clients in the field of technology and advanced industries, including identifying issues, forming hypotheses, designing and conducting analyses, and synthesizing conclusions into recommendations. Additionally, you will design new product development processes based on the principles of lean R&D and you'll work jointly with clients on putting those recommended changes into practice.

In this role, you will have the chance to be an entrepreneur, opening up new opportunities for client impact and reinventing McKinsey's approaches. You will be responsible for identifying new client opportunities to advise companies on transformational change and capability building.

You will advise developing consultants and be an important source of intellectual insight in the field of product development on client projects, framing business problems in a way that the teams can then execute to drive impact and value.

Advising and collaborating with individual project managers, you will be part of the day-to-day problem solving and will bring expertise directly to senior clients and team members alike.

You will also work in cooperation with our worldwide network of consultants to shape McKinsey's thinking in this area, continuously developing your own knowledge as well as that of the firm.

• Master's degree (STEM preferred); advanced graduate degree (eg, MBA, PhD) is beneficial
• Outstanding records of academic and managerial or professional achievement
• Proven record of leadership in a work setting and/or through extracurricular activities
• 12+ years of professional experience; prior experience as a consultant is preferred
• Functional experience and expertise, including, but not limited to, product development value engineering, design-to-cost, design-to-value, target costing, capability building, system engineering
• A clear aptitude for analytical and conceptual problem solving and conducting quantitative analyses
• Experience working in a collaborative approach and outstanding listening skills coupled with the ability to manage the scope and quality of work
• Overall deep working knowledge of product development (e.g., product optimization/value analysis, leading R&D projects, technical supplier management) with a business background/skill set
• Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
• Proven ability to influence others; ability to effectively collaborate and work in teams
• Spoken and written ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, in English and the local language
